    My store is open!
Wendy mentioned this a little while ago, but I wanted to announce it...since it is now open!

Over the last few weeks, I've been working on a cafepress store. My store has flower shirts, maternity, geek shirts and many birthday items. Please check them out:

I will be adding new designs often, so make sure to drop by more than once.

    Thanks!

    teeth
MF lost tooth #2 today. (She's been wiggling it constantly since the last one came out.)

This one doesn't have a great story like her last one. No watermellon eating contest here. Just fell out at school.

My baby has no bottom front teeth!

On another note, swimming class is okay so far.

    local food
In the spirit of getting local food, I got tonight's supper -- I bought lobster off of a boat.

A local lobsterman brings his lobster boat to a nearby dock and sells lobster off of it. I like being able to get it direct from the people that catch them.

As you would guess, it is cash only. He puts them in a brown bag, but I put them directly in a cooler.

I'll let you know later how tasty they are.

    eta: very, very tasty.

Now to figure out how I can use it all...

    Ugh, I'm old...
Years ago, dh's little cousin changed the channel for me when I was sick. I still remember his giggling "too boring", "too scary". I don't think he was much older than MF at the time.

He now just finished freshman year of college.

    Ugh.

    glasses
It is scary to think that it has been 2 years since MF got her first pair of glasses.

Well, her first pair is now too small, so she picked out a new pair. These are Barbie eyeglasses, (strawberry cream colored frames). Here she is modeling them:

I'll be modifying my icon soon, but I'll be keeping it up for a week or two so people can notice the difference...

    teeth
MF had a dentist appointment today. Her gums look great. Her teeth are clean. And...

Her bottom two front teeth are loose!

Since I thought I had at least a year, I haven't really thought about what to do...

What is the going rate for a tooth? Does everyone get money, or little gifts okay instead?

    holiday party
Remind me if I ever sign up for a craft table that making 30 craft kits should be done over several days, and not in one night... blah. I do think they came out pretty good though.

But, MF did love the gift from santa. Her eyes got real wide and she shouted "It was just what I wanted!". I hope we can do Santa at the party next year...

    serve new england
People in New England might be interested in Serve New England. A friend told me about this. I just picked up my December food package today. It's great for saving money.

If you volunteer at least 2 hours a month you can order things from the food coop. And any volunteering counts, even helping out a next door neighbor with shoveling, or babysitting someone elses kids.

Look here to see types of packages that are available. (Dec 2007 was already given out. Jan 2008 is the next package.)

    microwave
Note: If your microwave is beeping without you touching it, I would suggest throwing it away. Otherwise you might come downstairs and discover a smokey smell because the microwave turned itself on and burned a hole in itself...

After seeing the "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" and hearing the storm outside, all I can think of is:

"It was a dark and stormy night..."

Well, that and my daughter's voice shouting "Ugh..."

MF was listening to music this morning, but didn't quite hear the right words. She was listening to the BeeGee's Staying Alive. But, this is what she was singing...

    Lapbooks
Has anyone done any lapbooks? A friend told me about them. It seems it combines a bit of something like scrapbooking and putting together a book for a child to learn... It sounds very interesting...

    fish, week 1
Last week MF saved enough money for the fish. (It would have been at least a week more, but she told the liquor store lady about how she needs 50 coins to get a fish. The woman gave her all 8 pennies in the "take a penny" bowl.)

The next day we went to a local fish store. She at first wanted to get the fist betta fish she saw, but I convinced her to get a different one when I noticed that it was way too sluggish. The next one that caught her eye was pretty active, so we got that one. In that trip we got a male, red, betta fish and a "betta kit". The kit came with a 1/2 gallon bowl, with lid, gravel, a fake plant, food and water conditioner. MF decided to name her fish "Fish".

Pretty soon after we got home, we got the fish settled. MF kept on repeating how she LOVED her pet. (Cute quote: "Now our family has four people. Well, three people and a fish.") About an hour later MF started insisting her fish was hungry and needed to be fed. I carefully supervised the feeding.

The bowl is in MF's room, so she did stay up all night watching the fish. The second and third night she actually slept instead.

So far MF has been very good. She hasn't tapped on the glass. She remembers to feed it. The second day she kept on shouting to the fish "Wake up Fish!". I guess fish was kept up all night too. I did explain that shouting startles the fish, so now MF doesn't do that anymore.

For now, I am NOT having her do the water changes. That job is left for me.

    show and tell
MF's school has show and tell. This week they should bring an
object that starts with the letter "A". We got the letter home about this earlier in the month. I talked to MF about this last week.

Me: You get to bring something to school for show and tell. It can be anything, but it needs to start with the letter A.
MF, after thinking for a bit: A giraffe!
Me: That doesn't start with an A.
MF: yes it does - A giraffe.
Me: But that's two words, a and giraffe. The A should be the beginning of the object itself.
    MF: Oooooh
Me: Besides, you gave that giraffe to your cousin.
    MF: Oh yeah.
Me: So, do you have anything else you want to bring.
    MF: A zebra!
    Me: *sigh*

She finally decided on her Alex the Alligator book. (The one where you can move the mouth to snap-snap.) It sounds like the first show and tell went well.

    Alphabet bingo
Yesterday I came to pick up MF at school, and they were playing alphabet bingo. In this game, the teacher says a sound. The kids have to guess what letter that sound is. Once they know what the letter is, they can put a maker on their bingo board (if they have the letter). Looking at the children's boards, the game was about halfway through. This is what I saw. (CG = cute girl. CB = cute boy)

Teacher: Okay, the next letter sound like aaaah
MF raises her hand. teacher keeps looking at the other children, and adds "like apple"
CG raises her hand and the teacher calls on her.
    CG: "E"
Teacher: No, MF what do you think?
MF: "A" (and does the sign for a)
Teacher: What does everyone think, is she right? (Kids just look at her.) She's right. Okay, about this sound, puuh?
MF's hand goes up immediately, and a couple of seconds later CG's hand goes up.
    Teacher calls on CG
    CG: "E"
Teacher: No... Looks around at the other children, who aren't even guessing. Gives up and calls on MF.
MF: "P", (complete with the sign for P)

...a few more letters, with the same results...

Teacher: Okay, how about this letter, kuu, like kitten
    MF: "C"
    Teacher: no.
MF: hmm, this is a tricky one.
    CG: "E"
Teacher: No, it's not E. We already did E a while ago. Please stop saying E.
By this point MF's hand was up again.
    CB1: "P"
Teacher: No...(and says the boy's name while emphasizing the last letter, which happens to be a K.)
    CB2: "Q"
Teacher: No... (Looks around, and decides to call on MF again.)
    MF: "K"

...and repeat what happened earlier, until the end of the game.

I found it cute. MF might not be a star in geometry, but she is really good at letter bingo.

    Picture day
amymarr's post about Picture day made me remmeber that I didn't post about MF's picture day.

Not nearly as exciting as Amy's... I just wanted to post the memory so I wouldn't forget it.

They did send a letter reminding us about picture day. One of the days was MF's stay home day, but I figured she could have her picture done on the day she came in. But, no, they were only doing the kindergarten that day.

So, I talked to the director the day before, and she told me to call at 8:30 am since she wouldn't know the schedule until she talked to the photographer. So, at 8:45 am I called...and she is not in yet. Car trouble meant she wouldn't be in for at least another 30 minutes. And, of course, no one knew the schedule. I grabbed MF's picture outfit and brought her to gymnastics. Once that was over, I tried calling again. The director was in, but she was busy. They wanted me to call later. MF and I went to her free music class. After the class was over, I called again. They weren't sure when, so the director would call me to let me know when to come in. MF and I came home, she ate her lunch, and relaxed a bit before were were called in. On with the outfit, fix the hair again and off we go. The individual poses happened pretty quick after that (around 3:00 pm). But...the group poses wouldn't be for another 45 minutes to an hour. Unlike another mom who drove her child in, I decided to wait. (By the time I got her in the car, drove home and got her out of the car, she would only be home for a couple of minuted before I had to put her back in the car again.) Her teacher let her come play with the class while we waited....and waited....An hour and 15 minutes later, the director came in and let us know that group pictures would be tomorrow, because they were running late.

It wasn't too hard for us. But, you have to realize that all of the kids that went to school that day, they were wearing their fancy outfits all day. The teachers didn't take them outside, because they would get dirty. Most couldn't rest well, because they were uncomfortable. And, no painting or any other messy activities. So, most were just miserable. And, to top it off, they had to get dressed fancy the next day too?

Most of the parents (including me) put their kid in a nice, but not super fancy, outfit the next day. So, the group picture won't be quite as fancy as usual. But, maybe they will look happier.

We'll see how well they come out. MF was complaining that the photographer was telling her not to smile. Of course, her picture smile is more of a grimace, so it might be for the best. *crosses fingers*

    cleaner
I've had someone come help with the cleaning since MF was about 6 months old. She used to clean my mom's house, and still cleans her (unoccupied) condo. I stayed with her, even when she couldn't come for a couple of months because of family issues, and another time when she had a health scare.

She has seen my daughter more often than some relatives.

About 6 weeks ago, MF had an early playgroup. I told the cleaner she needed to come by a certain time. The time came and went, so I left a "I'm sorry, I waited as long as I could" note on the door. She replied back that she had a doctor apppt later, so she'll call to schedule another time. And that was the last I heard from her.

After she didn't arrive the next two scheduled times, I started to worry about her health. (The health scare wasn't that long ago.) I tried calling her, but always got the machine.

Finally, two days ago, I called and left a message asking if me and my mom need to hire someone else. She called back a day later -- my mother, not me, -- saying that her and my schedule didn't work for her, but she could still do my mothers condo.

Am I so scary that she couldn't call me? After four years I would expect a message... I mean, wtf?

My mother, of course, is still keeping her. *sigh*

    fish
After many conversations, MF convinced me that she can have a fish. I told her if she saves enough money for a fish, we will pay for a bowl.

I didn't think that would take too long, but she decided on a betta -- A bit more expensive than a feeder goldfish.

So, we have a couple of weeks to teach her not to knock on the glass. Also, to only feed it when we say...

All those with kids and fish, any advice?
